About « K9

Shelley Smith is the founder of K-9 Enterprises and a Certified Nose Work Instructor (CNWI) and Certifying Official (CO), under K9 Nose Work and the National Association of Canine Scent Work (NACSW). Shelley is also a Pet Partners Evaluator.

She began her Nose Work training in 2006 in Long Beach, California, and has been involved in Fun Nose Work classes since their inception.

Shelley was trained by Ron Gaunt, Master Trainer, and Amy Herot, both Founders of the NACSW and who have extensive K9 detection backgrounds, from which this dog sport was developed. Shelley currently teaches K9 Nose Work classes in the Portland, Oregon area.

Shelley moved to Oregon in August 2008 because of her love of the area and the culture. She introduced this dog sport to Oregon and has loved to share the techniques, knowledge and fun with all of the fabulous dog teams here through classes, workshops and trials. She has also trained and/or competed in both the K9 and Equestrian fields in agility, obedience, studio training, therapy work, K9 crisis response, freestyling and hunter jumping.

“I love the fun Nose Work sport because all dogs can do it. We learn to understand and observe our dogs in this sport, through doing what they like to do. We learn to observe and listen to communication coming from them, through their eyes and body movement. We bring happiness to their spirit, as they do something that they love to do, while we encourage their natural instincts. I believe that this sport will add a very special bond between you and your dog.”

Shelley enjoys evaluating therapy animal teams as a Pet Partner Evaluator in the Portland area. She has volunteered with Pet Partners for many years with her Golden Retrievers and at present, both volunteers and evaluates new and renewing teams for Pet Partners.
